Teaching God's Word In Your Home

I want to speak God’s word to my children daily.

I want them to know what God has to say about their life and their circumstances.

When good things happen I want them to know it’s because ultimately “every good and perfect gift is from above.” And when life is cruel and bad things happen, I want them to remember that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble.”

When some kid points out an imperfection or makes them feel less than, I want their minds to recall the words “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Basically, I want them to find their identity in who God says they are, not the world. I want their minds to be filled with God’s truth. But in order for that to happen, they have to know God and His word.

If you’re like me, trying to find simple ways of teaching your children God’s word during the everyday moments of life can be difficult. The busyness of each day can quickly take over anyone’s good intentions. Visual reminders can help us be more intentional about it. So it’s time to get out our markers and take over mirrors, dry-erase boards, and any other writeable surfaces.

Focusing on one verse a week is a great way to start building your child’s knowledge of scripture so they can commit it to memory. You’ll be amazed at how many different situations will crop up that week for you to teach a particular verse. Last week, I taught the first verse listed below and I probably said it ten times a day! I also noticed that I needed to take those verses to heart just as much as my kids. Many times, I forget to be kind to others especially in traffic and crowded grocery stores!

Here are just a few to get started with and make sure to add your own:

*Be kind to one another. Ephesians 4:32

*Every good and perfect gift is from above. James 1:17

*I am with you always. Matthew 28:20.

*Love one another. 1 John 3:23

*This is the day that the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

*I can do everything through Him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

*Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Ephesians 6:1 (My personal favorite!!)

*You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:39

*Whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

*We must obey God rather than men. Acts 5:29

*God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble. Psalm 46:1

*I praise you God, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:14

*Pray without ceasing. 1 Thessalonians 5:17

*Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105

*Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:31

*…when my heart is faint; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Psalm 61:2

*Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling. Proverbs 16:18

*Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5

*The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel. Proverbs 12:15
