When we think about the Bible, we think about God’s wisdom, direction, instruction, and correction, but there’s humor in there, too! Yes, believe it or not, there are some one-liners in there that will make you spit out your coffee or choke on your bagel.
It will be wrapped up in wisdom or instruction, but God has a sense of humor. You need only to look at His creation to see that! From birds that have wings but are too heavy to fly and the platypus that looks like it was created using leftover parts from all the other animal groups, you can almost see the smile spreading across God’s face. Then, of course, look at us. Laughing and finding the humor in life is practically in our DNA.
Below are some biblical one-liners from Proverbs that are sure to show you that God is the creator of all things, including humor.
As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly. Proverbs 26:11.
Okay, maybe this didn’t make you laugh. But say it to a five year old boy and see what happens! This one might only make you laugh if you also find burp and poop jokes funny, which my son does. Oh, and what a picture is painted here in this verse. I’m sure there are many other ways this could have been described, but it’s surely a good way to teach our children that repeating the same foolish mistake is, well, foolish. With imagery like that they won’t soon forget the intended message!
The leech has two daughters. “Give! Give!” they cry. Proverbs 30:15
Sometimes the truth is funny and makes us think. This one does both. I could see this one being made into a comic strip.
If you have played the fool and exalted yourself, or if you have planned evil, clap your hand over your mouth! Proverbs 30:32
Ummm…is that a nice way of saying shut up? I think so! This one is more of a slow burn.
Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife. Proverbs 25:24
This one sounds kind of like a knock, knock joke. Knock, knock. Who’s there? Better. Better who? Better to live on a corner of the roof….
Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion. Proverbs 11:22
Okay, I don’t know about you but this one had me at “gold ring in a pig’s snout.” But all that aside it’s an amusing way of saying it doesn’t matter how beautiful you are on the inside if you lack good judgment and act foolishly.
Well, that is all. Nobody said it was going to be a long list! Now, go read your Bible…
